WAM reported on 29 September that DEWA had moved 76% of its services to agentic AI within 90 days. Gulf News said that’s 16 of 21 services, covering about 210,000 transactions a year. Gulf News reported that daily payment reconciliation fell from about four hours to 12 minutes, a 95% cut. Arabian Business said electricity and water supply activation fell from eight minutes to two, and that technical notifications, once handled by 16 coordinators, now run automatically around the clock. DEWA plans to move its remaining five services within two months. Gulf News quoted DEWA CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer describing a shift from AI that supports users and gives information to AI that carries out tasks end to end. Gulf News said customers get fewer inputs, fewer steps, faster processing and round-the-clock service. Dubai Media Office published the official announcement, and Gulf News tied it to the UAE’s April target for agentic AI in government. What it adds up to
DEWA’s examples are useful because they’re ordinary: reconciling payments, activating supply and routing technical notices. These are high-volume tasks with clear rules and a clear finished state, which is where agentic AI is easiest to trust. Look for the same shape in your work this week: a task you repeat often, where the rules are written down and you can see at a glance whether it’s done right. That’s your best first candidate to automate. Tasks that need fresh judgement every time can wait.
